The highest volcano in Ecuador, Chimborazo, has an exuberant natural wealth on its slopes; the Vicuña trekking is done on the northeast side of Chimborazo passing through the Abraspungo valley at an average altitude of 4200 meters above sea level, between the Chimborazo and Carihuairazo snow-capped peaks.

A hike of approximately 22 km that is done in 2 days, the first day we leave from the Urbina station located at 3600 meters above sea level through trails in the moor to reach the UrkuWasi refuge at 4150 meters above sea level, in a journey of 10 km, from this point we have the freedom to hike to the glaciers of Chimborazo or to different waterfalls, in approximately 3 to 4 hours. We spend the night in traditional mountain huts, a spectacular site called Urku Wasi. At dawn after breakfast, we continue the journey passing by the Mechausca refuge located at 4200 meters above sea level, a journey of 12 km, and then transfer by vehicle to the hot springs of Chimborazo.

This hike is called "Trekking of the Vicuña" due to the presence of this species of Andean camelid in the foothills of Chimborazo, on the route you can also observe groups of llamas and alpacas grazing in the moorlands.

  • Tourist transportation from Riobamba to Urbina on the 1st day and return from Chimborazo to the city of Riobamba on the 2nd day.

ITINERARY FIRST DAY

08:00: Departure from your hotel in the city of Riobamba.

8:30: Canelazo in Urbina at 3600 masl (Posada la Estación).  

09:00: Beginning of the trekking following the moorlands along the slopes of Chimborazo up to 4150 meters above sea level at the Urku Wasi refuge, a journey of approximately 10 km.

12:00: Boxlunch.

13:00: Free time or cfree choice of 1 to 3 hours.

18:00: Dinner and lodging at the Urku Wasi lodge.

ITINERARY SECOND DAY

6:30: Breakfast.

7:00: Trekking through the Abraspungo valley to the Mechahuasca refuge (5 hours approx - 12 km).

  • We pass through the Abraspungo valley between the Carihuirazo and Chimborazo snow-capped mountains at an average altitude of 4200 masl.

13:00: Boxlunch (Mountain lunch).

13:30: Time to visit and relax at the Chimborazo hot springs, a natural site with medicinal waters. 

16:00 Return to the city of Riobamba.

18:00: Farewell and end of our services.
