Cotopaxi is located on the Cordillera Oriental, at a distance of 45 km southeast of Quito. Its edifice forms a symmetrical cone with slopes of up to 35° and a basal diameter of ~20 km, while the crater diameter varies between 800 m and 650 m in different directions. Cotopaxi its name means "neck of the moon", it is a toponym of our country.

The Cotopaxi volcano has an exotic dry microclimate that allows its ascent almost all year round. Starting at 4800 meters and in approximately 6 to 8 hours, you can reach the foot of the impressive half kilometer wide crater and be enraptured by the spectacular view of the peaks of most of the volcanoes of Ecuador.

It begins with a 3-hour hike from 4,600 masl until reaching the José Rivas Refuge at 4-800 masl, from there we can do glacier school at 5000 masl.

DAY 1: We drive from Riobamba for 3 hours to the Rivas refuge at (4,000 m.a.s.l.). After lunch we start walking for 3 hours to the glacier at 5,000 m.a.s.l. to receive instructions.

DAY 2: We get up at midnight of the first day and after a brief breakfast we start climbing at 12:00 a.m. It takes 6 to 7 hours to reach the summit and 3 to 4 hours to return to the refuge to drive back to Riobamba or to your destination.

Difficulty: Difficult, very good acclimatization and glacier experience are necessary.

    WHAT TO BRING?
    • Be in good physical condition.
    • Be acclimatized to the altitude before attempting the summit.
    • Bring thermal and waterproof clothing (thermal pants, jacket, windbreaker, gloves, cap), sun protection, sunglasses and backpack.
