CLIMBING CHIMBORAZO

WHY TAKE THIS TOUR?

It is a real challenge to reach the summit of the highest mountain in Ecuador and the world, measured from the center of the earth; Chimborazo is the closest point to the sun. Scientists and illustrious people such as Humbolt, La Condamine, the liberator Simón Bolívar climbed this mountain and were fascinated by its beauty and majesty.

It was first climbed by the Englishman Edward Whymper and the Carrel cousins, Italian guides of the Matterhorn in 1880, and has two refuges at 4800 and 5000 meters above sea level.

The ascent to the summit of Chimborazo from the second refuge (Whymper) takes approximately 8 hours, it should start at midnight to take advantage of the hardness of the snow, it is necessary to have high mountain equipment such as: crampons, ice axe, harness, poles, ropes, thermal and waterproof clothing, hiking boots, etc.. You must go with an experienced and certified guide. To do this mountain you must be in good physical condition and be acclimatized to the altitude.

DETAILS

DAY 1: We leave Riobamba at 12:00 noon and have a 1 hour trip to the first refuge of Chimborazo, at 4800 m.a.s.l., from here we walk for 45 minutes with our equipment to the Whymper refuge at 5000 m.a.s.l.. In the afternoon we rest in the refuge for acclimatization.

DAY 2: At midnight we start the ascent. After 1 to 2 hours we arrive to the glacier and after 1 hour more we arrive to the place called "El Castillo" from there it takes 4 hours more to reach the summit at 6.268 m.a.s.l. where you can appreciate the majesty of the Andes.

The descent to the refuge takes about 3 to 4 hours. At noon we return by car to Riobamba.

Difficulty: Difficult, very good acclimatization and glacier experience are necessary.

    WHAT TO BRING?
    • Be in good physical condition.
    • To be acclimatized to the altitude before attempting the summit of Chimborazo.
    • Bring thermal and waterproof clothing (thermal pants, jacket, windbreaker, gloves, cap), sun protection, sunglasses and backpack.
